General : Fahmi Asks MCMC To Clarify Meta's Response On Whatsapp Issues

PUTRAJAYA, Sept 30 — Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil has requested the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to provide a statement that clarifies Meta’s perspective on matters involving hacked and deactivated WhatsApp accounts. As of now, Minister Fahmi has not been provided with an update on the discussions held between MCMC and Meta regarding this issue.

Meta had requested a response by 3 pm the previous Monday concerning complaints raised by MCMC regarding hacked and deactivated WhatsApp accounts. Minister Fahmi instructed MCMC to issue a statement based on Meta’s response.

Previously, it was reported that MCMC had acknowledged public concerns over WhatsApp accounts allegedly being hacked, blocked, or inaccessible. The commission stated that it was examining the complaints received and had forwarded the cases to Meta for further clarification and action. MCMC also emphasized that account takeovers or hacking and account blocking were distinct issues.

They explained that hacked accounts could be exploited by irresponsible individuals for scams, spam, or violations of WhatsApp’s terms of service, potentially leading to the accounts being blocked by the platform.

Additionally, Minister Fahmi disclosed that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had directed Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar to engage with Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) alumni on methods to enhance their involvement in government discussions. This directive followed Anwar’s recent meeting with UiTM alumni, which included many experienced individuals from various sectors, including the corporate world.

The Prime Minister expressed satisfaction with the alumni’s willingness to contribute to discussions and joint efforts benefiting the nation’s interests. During their meeting, UiTM alumni demonstrated extensive experience and expressed their eagerness to collaborate with the government.
