Freedom Front Plus’ apartheid killers should not be elected councillors nor mayoral candidates

The Freedom Front Plus party should withdraw William Harrington's mayoral candidacy in Nelson Mandela Bay due to his apartheid-era murder conviction. John Jeffery, former deputy minister of justice and constitutional development, discusses the case of William Basil Harrington, who was convicted of murdering Mbongeni Jama in 1991 while serving as a police constable.

Jama, a teenager at the time, was abducted and killed by the riot unit under Harrington's command in Pietermaritzburg. The police initially claimed to release Jama, but later admitted to the murder and took the men to where his body was dumped. Harrington received the longest sentence of the three men convicted and applied for amnesty, which was denied.

The case highlights the atrocities committed during the apartheid regime and the need to condemn acts that defended this oppressive system.
