Food Security: Olam Seeks Partnership with NYSC to Boost Aquaculture

Olam Nigerian Limited, a major player in Nigeria's food industry, is seeking a partnership with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to enhance aquaculture development and empower young people across the country. Caroline Embu, NYSC's Director of Information and Public Relations, confirmed on Tuesday that Olam's General Manager, Mrs. Morenike Alayerogun, made the request during a courtesy visit to NYSC's headquarters in Abuja.

Alayerogun disclosed that approximately 200 corps members are currently serving with the organization in various capacities. Olam is keen to support the federal government's efforts in nation-building, youth development, and mentorship of corps members. In her statement, Alayerogun proposed the deployment of more corps members to bolster Olam's farm operations, particularly in Kwara State.

She added that after a year, these corps members would be attached to Olam's farmers nationwide. Alayerogun also proposed a partnership with NYSC to train more corps members who could then be supported by the Bank of Industry (BoI) to establish their own businesses. Brig. Gen. Olakunle Nafiu, Director-General of NYSC, acknowledged the global challenge of unemployment affecting young people.

He highlighted agribusiness as a significant component of Nigeria's economy, underscoring the importance of Olam's agricultural activities. Nafiu praised Olam for its contributions to the Nigerian economy and its efforts to empower corps members. He emphasized the NYSC's commitment to addressing the misuse and underutilization of corps members, urging employers to continue adding value to the corps members they deploy.

Nafiu emphasized that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) would be necessary to define the responsibilities of both parties, stressing that the security and welfare of corps members are top priorities.
