Exclusive-Anthropic's IPO pitch embraces AI's promise and peril

Anthropic, an artificial intelligence leader based in San Francisco, is preparing for its largest initial public offering in history, valuing the company at an estimated $2 trillion. The detailed 300-page prospectus, reviewed by Reuters, highlights the paradoxical nature of Anthropic's mission and objectives. On one hand, the company promises to revolutionize the global economy, transform every sector, and potentially take control over critical human endeavors.

On the other hand, it acknowledges that advanced AI systems could pose catastrophic or existential risks to humanity, and requires concentrated ownership and oversight to ensure safety. Despite its losses of over $50 billion in the past two years, Anthropic has more than $500 billion in spending commitments in the years to come.

The firm's reliance on major tech partners, such as Amazon, Alphabet's Google, Broadcom, and Microsoft, for 47% of its 2025 revenue, as well as for computational power, also makes them potential adversaries or competitors. In the IPO filing, Anthropic's CEO, Dario Amodei, acknowledged the challenges of balancing the responsibilities of leaders overseeing AI, emphasizing the need for global cooperation to confront both the opportunities and threats presented by this powerful technology.
