EOCO had tactical team ready to arrest Baffour Awuah – Felix Kwakye Ofosu

Government spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu revealed that the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) had a tactical team prepared to arrest MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah. The team was instructed to monitor the MP and decide on whether to arrest or invite him to discuss potential wrongdoing. During an appearance on Joy News’ PM Express, Mr. Ofosu clarified that the woman seen approaching Awuah in a viral video was an experienced law enforcement officer from EOCO. The officer had been with the service for approximately 17 years.

Mr. Ofosu defended the actions of the officer, stating that she demonstrated politeness and civility towards the MP, who she intended to apprehend. He noted that the officer did not pose any threat to Awuah during the interaction. Despite EOCO possessing the capability to use force to apprehend the MP, the team chose not to escalate the situation after an altercation. They assessed that applying force might worsen the situation and opted to retreat instead.

The MP's status as an elected representative did not exempt him from legal repercussions, according to Kwakye Ofosu. He emphasized that MPs should face the same consequences as anyone else if they commit a crime. He dismissed calls for special treatment for MPs when it comes to law enforcement, arguing that all individuals, regardless of their profession, should be treated equally under the law. However, he acknowledged the legal protections afforded to MPs while traveling to and from Parliament.
