Dubai Loop project advances as tunnelling work moves ahead

Dubai's ambitious Loop project is progressing rapidly, with construction activities underway as of February. The initiative, a key component of Dubai's future mobility plans, involves the creation of underground tunnels and the deployment of electric vehicles for passenger transport. A recent meeting between Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and Steve Davis, president of Elon Musk's The Boring Company, addressed the project's advancements and areas of collaboration.

The Boring Company plans to construct 150km of tunnels across the UAE, having already secured $3 billion in funding. During the meeting, Sheikh Hamdan and Davis, along with RTA officials, discussed the progress of Dubai Loop, which aims to enhance urban mobility and sustainability. The project's initial phase will be a 4-mile (6.4km) pilot route connecting the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) and Dubai Mall via four stations.

The full alignment is projected to stretch up to 14 miles (22.5km), encompassing 19 stations and linking the Dubai World Trade Centre with Business Bay. The tunnels will measure 12 feet (3.6 meters) in diameter and are specifically designed for vehicle transport. Each phase of the project is expected to carry around 13,000 passengers daily, with the full route accommodating approximately 30,000 passengers a day.

The first phase of Dubai Loop is projected to cost around $154 million and take about a year for completion, while the complete route is estimated to cost about $545 million and take three years to implement. The partnership between RTA and The Boring Company aims to deliver advanced, safe, and highly efficient tunnelling solutions, with tunnelling activities set to commence in the second half of 2026.
