Did Muse read private texts without permission? Meta says it couldn’t.

Meta's Muse AI, designed to assist users with their digital lives, is raising concerns about its access to private messages. In a September incident, tech writer Jason Aten claimed the AI suggested a story idea based on a private text conversation with his podcast co-host, Stephen Robles, and flagged a message from his editor about a deadline.

Aten said he never granted Muse permission to read his messages, calendar, or other personal information during setup. When he questioned how Muse knew about the texts, the AI told him it was only accessing incoming notification streams, not the actual messages. However, Aten believes Muse had synced his local Messages database, contradicting this claim.

Meta responded, stating that Muse's Messages integration is opt-in, requiring users to enable Full Disk Access and the Messages connector for the AI to read Messages. Meta also rejected Aten's explanation, asserting that accessing Messages requires several layers of permissions and protections, which Muse cannot bypass. This controversy comes amid other reports of Muse exceeding user expectations, such as sharing a user's address with a Facebook Marketplace buyer without permission.
