Delhi ITMS: Rs 1,789 crore traffic plan explained

Delhi is set to implement an Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) with a budget of Rs 1,789.52 crore, approved by the Cabinet. The project, to be carried out by the Delhi Police, involves 42 traffic corridors and will span three phases over 24 months, followed by five years of operation and maintenance. The ITMS aims to revolutionize traffic management by leveraging real-time monitoring, adaptive signals, automated enforcement, and integrated command-and-control infrastructure.

By responding to changing traffic volumes and providing real-time data, the system will help authorities manage congestion, accidents, and other disruptions more effectively. One of the key features is Adaptive Traffic Control Systems, which dynamically adjust signal timings based on traffic conditions. This will reduce unnecessary stops, improve traffic flow, and optimize the use of existing road capacity.

Additionally, the system will prioritize ambulances and other emergency vehicles, providing green corridors to help them navigate congested areas more swiftly. Commuters will also benefit from live traffic and parking information through Variable Message Sign boards and digital platforms, allowing them to plan their journeys more efficiently.

The ITMS will enforce traffic violations through AI-powered analytics, detecting offenses such as red-light violations, stop-line infringements, overspeeding, wrong-way driving, and illegal parking. Implementing the project will involve the Delhi Police through a Master System Integrator, with technical support provided by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) as the Project Management Consultant.
