Avengers: Doomsday Directors Reveal Approximate Runtime, Tease 'Very Surprising Ending'

Marvel fans can expect a surprising conclusion to Avengers: Doomsday, as directors Joe and Anthony Russo teased. Speaking to Fandango, Anthony Russo described the film as a focused, propulsive narrative with an organizing principle and everything orbiting around it. The Russo brothers mentioned the movie would be around two-and-a-half hours long, though the exact runtime is still uncertain due to recent reshoots.

Only three Marvel films have surpassed the two-and-a-half hour mark: Eternals (157 minutes), Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (161 minutes), and Avengers: Endgame (181 minutes). The Russos revealed that audiences won't be bored by Avengers: Doomsday, as it has a well-structured narrative with a surprising ending. Joe Russo hinted that the conclusion would be unexpected, and it seems clear that Doctor Doom's story won't be concluded in the film.

The movie is set to be the first part of the story, so it's unlikely to wrap everything up with a happy ending. Fans can compare Avengers: Doomsday to the first film in the Russo brothers' previous Avengers two-parter, where the Avengers lost to Thanos and the movie ended with a shocking cliffhanger. The Russos have been promoting Avengers: Endgame Encore, which includes four new scenes not found in Doomsday.

One of these scenes shows Doctor Doom collecting the Hulk, suggesting he may sit out Doomsday and return in Secret Wars. Avengers: Doomsday releases in theaters on December 18.
