A no-cost audio upgrade for my workstation

The author, a hacker and GNU enthusiast, had an outdated desktop machine with a noisy motherboard. They were seeking a solution for a noisy soundcard. Their studio had a Rane SL3 audio interface, which they plugged into their machine. The device's USB worked but there was no audio output. The Rane SL3 was capable of emulating vinyl playback, a crucial transition for DJs.

After searching for a software solution, the author found a Linux kernel module hosted on a web repository. This module enabled audio functionality on their device. They packaged the software using Guix, a package manager, without the need for testing or extensive build infrastructure. The package, under a freedom-respecting GNU GPL license, was then proposed for inclusion in the main Guix repository.

Testing the package involved adjusting a minimal operating system template and building an emulation-ready image, which was feasible without reconfiguring the entire system.
