Winnipeg Jets add new goalie through waivers before making final cuts

The Winnipeg Jets have added a new goaltender through waivers, avoiding the need to trade their current backup, Connor Hellebuyck. They claimed netminder Clay Stevenson from the Washington Capitals just hours before finalizing their opening-day roster. Stevenson, 27, has limited NHL experience, having played only five games with the Capitals over the past two seasons while primarily appearing in the AHL with the Hershey Bears.

Last season, Stevenson posted a 3-1 record with the Capitals, a 2.00 goals against average, and a .921 save percentage. The Alberta native won the Calder Cup with Hershey in 2024. In the AHL, Stevenson went 18-13-1 in 37 games last season. To reach the 23-man limit, the Jets made two final cuts, loaning goalie Domenic Divincenziis and forward Brayden Yager to the AHL’s Manitoba Moose.

The team will now consist of 13 forwards, eight defencemen, and two goalies. Injuries will see Elias Salomonsson, Walker Duehr, and Garrett Brown start the season on the injured list. Of the 23 players, 17 have played for the Jets previously, including six newcomers such as Viggo Björck and Tyrel Bauer. The Jets are set to open their season on Friday against the Boston Bruins at home.
