University of Guelph promises review, changes after chaotic homecoming party

The president of the University of Guelph, Rene Van Acker, has announced that the institution will conduct a review and make changes following a chaotic off-campus homecoming party last weekend. The gathering was significantly larger than usual and involved students and non-students engaging in disruptive behavior, property damage, and criminal activity.

Guelph police reported objects being thrown, people climbing buildings, shoplifting, vandalism, and numerous alcohol-related offenses, leading to several criminal and provincial charges being laid.

Van Acker expressed deep disappointment in the events that transpired and emphasized the university's commitment to preventing such incidents in the future. The school extends gratitude to first responders, Guelph General Hospital, and city staff for their swift response over the weekend.

Police authorities are continuing to review the reported incidents, evidence, and video footage, with the possibility of laying additional charges. Guelph is not alone in facing challenges with off-campus parties during fall seasons, as other university towns have also experienced similar issues. In Ottawa, for example, the annual Panda Game between Carleton and Ottawa universities has seen post-game misbehavior in recent years, including a flipped car and stolen street signs, which has resulted in hospitalizations.
