Universiti Malaya becomes first Malaysian university to break into Times Higher Education Top 200

KUALA LUMPUR, September 30 — Universiti Malaya (UM) has achieved historic recognition by becoming the inaugural Malaysian university to enter the prestigious global Top 200 of the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings for the 2027 edition. UM currently occupies the 194th spot, marking a significant leap from its 2023 ranking of between 351-400.

In a statement released today, UM reaffirms its position as Malaysia's top-ranked university in the THE World University Rankings, occupying approximately the top 8.5 percent of the 2,297 universities globally assessed this year.

UM Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr Noor Azuan Abu Osman, attributed the milestone to the collective strength of the university community, highlighting the institution's enhanced confidence, sharper purpose, and stronger global relevance. He emphasized that breaking into the global Top 200 is not the end goal, but a statement of intent, demonstrating UM's increased global competitiveness.

Professor Osman also conveyed that this achievement belongs to the entire UM community, sending a clear message that a Malaysian university can compete with the world's leading institutions when ambition is paired with discipline, talent, and collective purpose.

In discussing the future, Professor Osman outlined plans to leverage this momentum to bolster UM's contributions to Malaysia and expand its international impact, particularly through research and the cultivation of future-ready graduates. He credited the success to the efforts of UM's academic and professional staff, researchers, students, alumni, partners, as well as the support from the university's leadership, the Malaysian government, and the broader higher education community.

The THE World University Rankings employs a research-intensive system evaluating universities across five pillars: teaching, research environment, research quality, industry collaboration, and international outlook. UM's strength in the 2027 rankings is particularly notable in the International Outlook and Research Quality categories, which reflect the university's growing international academic network, research collaborations, and the increasing reach and influence of its scholarly output.

The university's overall performance across the other pillars also demonstrates its evolution into a comprehensive research institution with an expanding global footprint.
