UN chief race: Costa Rica's Rebeca Grynspan leads fourth Security Council straw poll

Candidates must also secure support from the council's five permanent members, who possess the power to block any nominee.

Grynspan's path forward faces challenges, as Washington could potentially oppose her due to perceived closeness to China and her stance on Gaza. Similarly, Grossi's bid is hindered by Russian opposition, and Argentine President Javier Milei's comments on the Falkland Islands could create difficulties for his candidacy. Meanwhile, Birkett Rodrigues faces resistance from the United States over her perceived connections to China and her views on the Gaza conflict.

The significance of this year's selection is heightened, as the UN has never been led by a woman in its 81-year history. Several women are currently vying for the position, and some argue that a technocrat rather than a high-profile political figure could better challenge governments and take risks. The next phase of the contest is anticipated to bring clearer results as the council transitions to color-coded ballots, which separate the votes of the five permanent members from those of its 10 elected members.

Ultimately, a candidate must secure at least nine votes in the Security Council, while avoiding opposition from any of the five permanent members.
