Torrevieja to Reserve Caretaker Job for Applicant with Intellectual Disability

Torrevieja, a Spanish municipality, has announced plans to reserve a caretaker position exclusively for individuals with intellectual disabilities. This marks the first time such a dedicated vacancy will be advertised. The caretaker role is one of 16 positions included in the town's public employment plans for 2024, 2025, and 2026. The remaining 15 posts will be advertised separately, with four reserved for applicants with physical, sensory, or other disabilities.

The specialized recruitment process for the reserved caretaker position will have its unique rules and an Easy Read language syllabus, complete with visual aids to facilitate comprehension. The exam will feature multiple-choice questions with three answer options, offer extended time limits, and eliminate penalties for incorrect responses. María José Ruiz, a personnel councillor, emphasized that the goal is to eliminate barriers faced by intellectual disability applicants in standard public sector recruitment procedures.

The proposal has been submitted to Torrevieja's Municipal Diversity Council for consideration. The town hall has also sought assistance from local associations to publicize the vacancy and provide support to applicants throughout the selection process. However, the recruitment rules still need approval through the council's negotiating committee. The complete terms and adapted syllabus are anticipated to be published in official bulletins and on the town hall's electronic portal in the coming months.
