Three suspected CIT robbers killed in shootout with Gauteng police

Gauteng police engaged in a deadly shootout with suspected cash-in-transit robbers on the R80 highway on Monday, September 28. The incident resulted in the deaths of three suspects and the arrest of another individual. Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, a spokesperson for Gauteng police, revealed that a multidisciplinary team comprising members from the SAPS Tactical Response Team, Anti-Gang Unit, Gauteng Traffic Air Wing, and private security companies was tracking intelligence suggesting the suspects were planning a robbery.

The team, upon spotting a white Hyundai H1 on the highway, attempted to stop the vehicle using blue lights. However, the occupants allegedly opened fire on the police, prompting a response that led to the fatal wounding of three suspects. The police recovered an AK-47 rifle and a 9mm pistol from the vehicle. Another suspect, believed to be working with the same team, was apprehended in a Toyota Avanza and found in possession of a 9mm pistol.

Forensic experts are currently processing the scene for further evidence. The recovered firearms will undergo ballistic testing to determine if they are linked to other crimes. Gauteng Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Policing, Major General Fred Kekana, commended the multidisciplinary team for their efforts in disrupting cash-in-transit robberies and cross-pavement robberies in the province.
