Tebas says Man City should face 'most severe' sanctions if guilty of rule breaches

La Liga president Javier Tebas has stated that Manchester City should face the most severe sanctions available if they are found guilty of financial regulation breaches. An independent panel reported that City was guilty on all but one of 115 charges for breaking Premier League rules, though no official announcement or punishment has been made yet by the English top-flight.

City, backed by Abu Dhabi, has consistently denied the allegations, with chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak declaring his faith in their innocence. Potential sanctions could involve points deduction and even expulsion from the Premier League, while other clubs are reportedly seeking legal advice on possible compensation.

Tebas emphasized the importance of equal rules for all to protect the integrity and sustainability of the game. He has been raising concerns about City since 2017, noting that breaking rules for more than 10 years, even if minor, is very serious. Tebas believes there must be severe punishment not only to set an example but because the rules were indeed broken.

He also called for the Court of Arbitration for Sport to reassess its decision to lift UEFA's two-year European ban on City, which was imposed in 2020, arguing that the sanctions were justified.
