‘Strong criticism is legitimate but insult is not argument’ – Speaker urges restraint in public discourse

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has urged Members of Parliament and the public to differentiate between valid political criticism and personal attacks, emphasizing that accountability cannot be compromised through abusive language. According to Bagbin, robust disagreement is an integral part of democracy, but it should be communicated in a manner that respects the dignity of others.

During an emergency session of Parliament on September 29, he warned that insulting or demeaning individuals or institutions does not contribute to the quality of democracy.

Bagbin stressed that political disagreements should not hinder the recognition of each other's humanity and equal rights, adding that Ghana's democratic stability relies not only on its institutions but also on disciplined, dignified, and responsible public engagement. He highlighted Parliament's role in promoting respectful discourse, noting that the behavior and language of lawmakers often have a significant impact on national conversations.

The Speaker also expressed disappointment that some MPs' language has occasionally fallen short of the standards set for elected representatives. He called on politicians to exemplify responsible communication, asserting that Parliament cannot expect high standards from journalists and citizens if it fails to hold its own members accountable. Bagbin emphasized that demonstrating the possibility of vigorous political disagreements without resorting to destructive behavior is crucial.
