Spain announces new housing measures after protests over 87-year-old woman's eviction

The Spanish government has unveiled fresh housing proposals following demonstrations sparked by the eviction of an 87-year-old woman in Madrid. The coalition government met on Tuesday to deliberate on the measures, which could include a ban on evictions until 2030, according to Health Minister Mónica García. The plans aim to provide relief to over five million individuals, but opposition lawmaker Míriam Nogueras criticized the agreement as neglecting small landlords.

The proposed measures must still be approved by parliament, where the leftist coalition government lacks a majority. García suggested the government should tackle the speculative housing market and promote balance between citizens and "vulture funds." She also acknowledged the role of protests, saying: "Thanks to the mobilisations and the encampments, this would not have been possible."

However, Nogueras, spokesperson for the pro-Catalan independence party Junts, argued against grouping together those who have invested in housing with vulture funds, calling it a "mistake." The minority government, comprising the ruling Socialists and junior partners Sumar, has 30 days to reach a consensus in parliament. Socialist Housing Minister Isabel Rodríguez will offer further details on the measures during a news conference later on Tuesday.
