Smart lights to respond to Kulai traffic in real time

Kulai Municipal Council is testing a smart traffic system in Indahpura to reduce wait times at traffic lights. Johor Housing and Local Government Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor said the system, which adjusts signal timings based on real-time traffic, will be evaluated by its impact on journey times and vehicle queues.

The Virtual Loop technology, sensors, and intelligent controls detect traffic demand and modify signal timings, giving priority to busier lanes while reducing waiting times for less busy ones. This differs from traditional fixed-time signals, which cannot adapt to varying traffic conditions. The system can also coordinate signals across multiple intersections and monitor its operation in real-time through the Kulai Integrated Command, Control and Communication Centre.

Countdown timers are installed to help motorists anticipate traffic light changes. Phase One of the trial covers six locations in Kulai, with five already equipped with the system, including the Bandar Putra-Indahpura interchange. The next phase, scheduled for completion by December, will expand to seven additional junctions, including Persiaran 1, Indahpura/FT1 intersection.

Jafni emphasized that the trial's success will be measured by actual data, such as reduced journey times and shortened queues, rather than just confirming the system's technical functionality.
