Samsung expects its foundry customers to quadruple by 2029

Samsung Electronics Co. anticipates a substantial expansion of its foundry business, with the number of customers potentially quadrupling by 2029 compared to 2017, according to Noh Mi-jung, a senior vice president at the foundry business. The company's focus is shifting from mobile products towards artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing (HPC), with HPC currently accounting for 28 percent of the foundry business in 2017 but projected to reach 66 percent by 2029.

By 2029, Samsung expects HPC customers to make up more than half of its customer base, while HPC will also contribute over half of its sales. The technology giant plans to commence mass production of its third-generation 2-nanometer process in 2028, followed by the 1.4-nanometer process in 2029. Samsung's first fab of its Taylor semiconductor complex in Texas is slated to begin initial operations by the end of this year, with construction of a second fab commencing within the same year, aiming for mass production in 2030.
