Safe schools begin with adults noticing bullying signs

Bullying often begins with small acts of control, demands, and jokes that become familiar to the people around the victim. In a hostel setting, an older student may attempt to assert authority over a newcomer, expecting them to fetch water or adjust to life away from home. These actions may seem harmless, but they can create an environment where the junior feels uncomfortable and intimidated.

To an outside observer, these moments may appear unrelated, but a younger student can sense a pattern of behavior that crosses the boundary between acceptable guidance and abusive control. To address bullying effectively, schools must establish clear boundaries and expectations before the issues even arise. The first adult to hear a concern should listen attentively without dismissing the account as mere teasing, check the child's safety, and ensure that the concern reaches someone who can take action. Once the concern has been documented and examined fairly, the principal or headmaster must take appropriate steps to protect the child and address the issue with the necessary consequences.

This process should be repeated throughout the year, with each adult playing a role in upholding the boundaries and fostering a respectful environment. Clear communication and training for educators, staff, and parents are crucial in creating a safe space for students. By addressing bullying from the start and providing multiple avenues for reporting concerns, schools can help prevent and resolve these issues before they escalate.
