Doha, Qatar - The Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) is enhancing health and nutrition services for vulnerable individuals in Yemen through a new humanitarian project. This initiative targets over 50,000 people in Abs District, Hajjah Governorate and has been funded with $600,000 from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs' (OCHA) Yemen Humanitarian Fund (YHF).
The project involves the rehabilitation and operation of five health facilities - consisting of one hospital and four health centres. These facilities receive support in the form of medications, medical equipment, solar panels, water supply, fuel, operating materials, and staff salaries. This comprehensive approach aims to address the urgent health and nutritional needs of the community.
A key focus of the project is the treatment of acute malnutrition among children and women. QRCS plans to launch therapeutic and supplementary nutrition programs, as well as set up infant and young child feeding consultation corners at the targeted facilities.
Additionally, the project strengthens early detection of malnutrition by enlisting community health volunteers to conduct screenings and referrals. Furthermore, QRCS will initiate community-based screening campaigns and awareness-raising activities focused on malnutrition prevention and control.
Dr. Munira Dahan Al-Aini, a programmes specialist at QRCS' office in Yemen, highlighted that this project equips health facilities to provide a wide range of services including primary health care, reproductive health, maternal and child care, emergency medicine, nutrition, and mental health.
