Punjab to Distribute 120,000 Electric Two- and Three-Wheelers

On Monday, the Punjab government convened a stakeholder consultation to outline the province's shift towards environmentally friendly transportation and the strategy for earning carbon credits under the Punjab Clean Air Program (PCAP). The initiative intends to distribute approximately 120,000 electric two and three-wheelers to Punjab residents through financially accessible options.

The goal is to lower vehicle emissions while creating a chance to generate transferable carbon credits through verified emission cuts. Discussions at the meeting centered on low-interest installment and financing structures to make electric vehicles more attainable for daily commuters and commercial operators. Additionally, plans for charging points, battery waste management, and targeted access for women and low-income groups were deliberated upon.

The consultation also prioritized establishing clear systems to quantify, report, and verify emission reductions, enabling the project to qualify for carbon credits under the globally recognized Verified Carbon Standard administered by Verra. Attendees represented various departments, including Environment, Excise, Transport, and Planning and Development; Bank of Punjab; vehicle manufacturers; dealers; battery-swapping companies; financial institutions; civil society organizations; and consumers.

The Punjab government pledged to integrate suggestions from the meeting into the project's design and execution plans. This consultation is part of PCAP's wider endeavor to diminish smog, vehicle emissions, and other air pollution sources across the province.
