Populasi Harimau Malaya meningkat selepas usaha konservasi diperkasa

The Malaysian tiger population has shown an increase, recording fewer than 150 individuals compared to 2021, according to Minister of Indigenous Peoples and Environmental Sustainability Arthur Joseph Kurup. This positive development was achieved since the implementation of nine strategic conservation actions for the Malayan tiger in 2021.

Kurup spoke after a meeting of the National Tiger Implementation Working Group (MyTWG), attended by state representatives from the rainforest areas of Johor, Kedah, Kelantan, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, Perak, Selangor, and Terengganu. He emphasized that the meeting also discussed strengthening the Conservation Detection Dog (K9) unit of the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) to enhance enforcement, particularly in preventing tiger poaching at the country's main entry points.

The meeting also aimed to strengthen monitoring and recovery of the Malayan tiger population and their prey species through the Field Survey and Conservation Program (BP3) and the Conservation and Recovery Population Strengthening for the Malayan Tiger and Prey Species. During the meeting, the status of Conservation Assured Tiger Standards (CA|TS) accreditation in Malaysia was also discussed to strengthen the management and protection of Malayan tiger habitats.

Four protected areas and forest reserves are now registered as CA|TS sites, including Taman Negara in Pahang, Kelantan, and Terengganu, Endau-Rompin National Park, Temenggor Forest Complex, and Amanjaya Wildlife Sanctuary, according to Arthur. He stated that this progress demonstrates that efforts to save the Malayan tiger can yield results when all parties work together to address the species' population crisis.

Arthur concluded by emphasizing that it is crucial to continue these ongoing efforts to ensure the Malayan tiger, which symbolizes Negara Negara, does not become extinct.
