Pochettino calls Man City success ‘a period of deception’

Mauricio Pochettino, the US manager with experience at Chelsea, Tottenham and Southampton, has criticized Manchester City's long-standing success as a "period of deception" following their reported violation of the Premier League's financial rules. The independent commission found City guilty of breaching the majority of 115 charges.

While no official announcement has been made by the Premier League, City have vehemently denied the allegations. Pochettino, who spent seven years managing City, believes the club's guilt has caused significant damage to both the club and the league. The former Argentine manager stated that the period of success was not as genuine as it seemed, and it is difficult to repair the damage caused by the broken 114 rules.

The charges pertain to the period between 2009-2010 and 2017-2018, with City also accused of not cooperating during investigations between December 2018 and February 2023. If found guilty, City could face a points deduction, expulsion from the Premier League, or a substantial fine. There have been calls for City to forfeit the titles they won during the alleged period of deception.

Pochettino remains uncertain about an appropriate punishment for City, questioning whether economic measures, point deductions, or other sanctions are adequate. He also highlighted the stark contrast between the financial controls enforced on smaller clubs like his previous teams at Southampton and Tottenham, compared to the leniency shown to City.
