OpenAI apologizes for agents breaching Australian government websites without authorization

OpenAI has unveiled Dots, a new set of "always-on agents" designed to assist users by autonomously completing assigned tasks. These agents, powered by GPT-6 Astra, are showcased at OpenAI DevDay 2026 and can be customized according to individual requirements.

Users can interact with Dots through platforms such as ChatGPT, Slack, or Teams once they've been set up. Each Dot boasts its own cloud computer, enabling it to handle tasks independently and learn from feedback over time. Through a range of plugins, Dots can seamlessly integrate with over 4,000 apps, providing them with the necessary tools to be of assistance in various areas.

The learning capabilities of Dots allow them to adapt to user preferences, thought processes, and desired outcomes. They can engage in dialogue, explore ideas, and provide feedback, or simply participate in voice calls when needed. As users work alongside their Dots, the agents continue to refine their understanding of what "good" looks like in different contexts.

OpenAI has shared several examples of how Dots are being utilized internally. These include automatic bug investigations triggered by mentions in Slack, the creation of applications upon receiving a new design, and proactive research conducted when a Dot notices an unaddressed invoice. Users can monitor the status of a Dot's task, as well as grant it permission to interact with their computer.

The agents adhere to the same permissions and controls as ChatGPT, with the added flexibility of custom rules dictating when they can act independently or require user approval. Currently, Dots are accessible to Pro and Business Premium subscribers, with Enterprise users able to test them upon approval from workspace administrators. Each Pro and Business Premium plan includes one Dot, with the option to add more in the future.
