No need for Ismail to resign despite missteps, say analysts

Analysts argue Ismail Lasim should retain his position as Negeri Sembilan's menteri besar, despite several recent political missteps. Azmi Hassan, from Akademi Nusantara, maintains Ismail enjoys strong support from grassroots constituents, particularly in Kuala Pilah. Political analyst Mazlan Ali from Universiti Teknologi Mara believes it would be challenging for Umno to replace him.

Azmi notes that Ismail's decisions on the Yang Dipertuan Besar Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir dispute were complex due to their impact on the monarchy and palace. The G25 group of former civil servants urged Ismail to resign over the palace crisis, alleging he signed a proclamation seeking Tuanku Muhriz's removal and then offered conflicting explanations.

However, Azmi asserts Ismail's ties to the local community, having served seven terms, indicate a strong foundation. The G25 group urged his resignation, arguing his position as menteri besar was untenable due to his role in the Tuanku Muhriz siring controversy. Yet, Azmi maintains Ismail still holds significant backing from Umno's grassroots and leadership to stay in office, preventing a potential replacement.
