N.S. man sentenced to six years for killing ailing wife after they were evicted

Douglas Andrew Smith, a man from Nova Scotia, has been given a six-year prison sentence for the manslaughter of his 72-year-old wife, Iris Dodd, who was suffering from poor health. The couple had been evicted from their home when the incident occurred. Smith confessed to killing Dodd, telling a 911 operator he was responsible for her death.

Police found Dodd in a recliner, unconscious, in the couple's home in Kingsport, about 85 kilometers northwest of Halifax. The Crown prosecutor noted that the impending eviction and Dodd's declining health were factors in Smith's actions. Smith must surrender a DNA sample and avoid firearms permanently.
