Más de un tercio de las mujeres con hijos tiene menos de los deseados: “Las condiciones óptimas llegan muy tarde”

A significant issue for experts is the fertility gap in Spain, where almost 35% of women with children have fewer kids than they desire, according to new data from the National Statistics Institute. This trend remains largely unchanged since 2018, with only a slight five-tenth decrease. The survey reveals a country where vital life transitions are increasingly delayed, including the age of independence, finding a suitable partner, and securing a good job.

Demographer Mariona Lozano from the Autonomous University of Barcelona notes that the conditions considered optimal for having children are reached far too late. While most women prefer to have two children (seven out of ten), on average, they have only 1.1 children, based on the latest available data from 2024.
