Man Utd should not get City’s titles if stripped, says Rooney, backs relegation

Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has expressed his stance on Manchester City potentially losing their Premier League titles if the club is found guilty of financial rule breaches. Rooney believes that City should face relegation as a punishment for the charges they have been found guilty of, although the specific sanctions have not been announced yet.

The charges relate to the period from 2009-10 to 2017-18, and City has also been accused of failing to cooperate with Premier League investigations between December 2018 and February 2023. Rooney, who was part of the Manchester United team that finished second to City in the 2011-12 Premier League season, stated that he would not accept a retrospective title win for the team, as they did not feel they deserved it.

He emphasized that he would be "devastated" if Manchester United's titles were taken away due to similar breaches. Rooney also believes that City should be relegated, suggesting a severe punishment such as a 20-point deduction for the next three years, which would make it difficult for the club to return to the top tier.
