Malaysia ready for Causeway derby as race to Asean Cup final heats up

Jakarta, September 29 — Interim head coach Tan Cheng Hoe has stated that Malaysia is well-prepared to face Singapore in their upcoming Asean Cup 2026 Division 1 Group A match in Bandung. Cheng Hoe highlighted the team's increased confidence and experience gained from their first two matches, including a goalless draw against Indonesia.

However, he anticipates another challenging game against Singapore, describing it as a "Causeway derby." The coach acknowledged the physical toll of the recent matches and the travel to Bandung, emphasizing the team's need for proper recovery and preparation. The technical staff will evaluate the players' fitness and make necessary adjustments for the Singapore match.

Cheng Hoe also noted that the established chemistry among Johor Darul Ta'zim players gives Malaysia an advantage, but stressed that team performance is crucial for their success. Currently leading Group A with four points, Malaysia is level with Indonesia on goal difference, while Singapore is third with three points and Bangladesh is at the bottom with no points.

The group winners will advance to the final, while the runners-up will compete in the third-place playoff at GBK on the following Monday.
