Lee proposes higher refund of fare for off-peak commuters

President Lee Jae Myung recently proposed a higher refund of fares for individuals who utilize public transportation during off-peak hours. This suggestion came during a Cabinet meeting following the transport ministry's announcement that the reimbursement rate for off-peak transportation users has been increased from 20% to 30%.

Lee questioned whether the existing 20 to 30 percent refund is sufficient for financially struggling individuals. He noted that easing rush-hour congestion also aligns with the government's policy and serves the national interest. Lee proposed that higher refunds could help those who face the hardship of starting work as early as 4:30 or 5 a.m.

Lee suggested that covering about half the cost of transportation might be reasonable, adding that the increase would not require a significant additional budget. Budget Minister Park Hong-geun responded to Lee's proposal.
