KZN political parties sign Electoral Code of Conduct ahead of LGE

Political parties and independent candidates in KwaZulu-Natal are scheduled to sign the National Electoral Code of Conduct on Tuesday ahead of the November municipal elections. The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) reports that a total of 101 parties and 104 independent candidates will be contesting elections in 54 municipalities across the province.

However, only 17 political parties will participate in the signing ceremony as they are the ones contesting elections province-wide. The ceremony, held at the Olive Convention Centre in Durban, aims to present a united front against political violence, intimidation, and disinformation. IEC's Head of Elections in KZN, Ntombifuthi Masinga, stated that the leaders will publicly affirm their commitment to peaceful, fair, and democratic participation in the elections.

The signing of the pledge will involve the public signing of the code of conduct, which includes a new section on countering disinformation. The codes outline the expected standards of conduct during the election period, with consequences for any contraventions. These events underscore the significance of adhering to the Electoral Code of Conduct and the standards expected of all participants throughout the electoral process.
