Kenyan court halts Dangote refinery work as firm says groundbreaking holds

The Malindi Environment and Land Court in Kenya has halted the construction of the proposed Dangote refinery in Lamu County until further notice. The decision was made after local farmers and residents opposed the project, alleging "forceful eviction" and destruction of their properties. Judge Jane Onyango instructed that the current situation be maintained until the court meets on October 14 to provide further directions.

The petitioners, represented by lawyer George Wakahiu, argue that the project entails the forced eviction of the plaintiffs from their lands, damage to their properties, and the absence of a sufficient resettlement plan. They also claim the project does not comply with Kenya's environmental code, which mandates an environmental impact assessment before major projects, and Kenya's constitution, which requires public participation.

However, Dangote Group and the Kenyan authorities claim that the court has not halted the groundbreaking ceremony, stating that activities at the site may be affected by the ruling. According to the court's order, both parties are prohibited from initiating any activities until the case is heard on October 14.
