Katz: Rioters undermine security efforts, the settlement enterprise, and the State of Israel

Tensions between Israel and the Netherlands have escalated recently due to the Netherlands imposing a ban on importing and trading goods from Israeli settlements in the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and the Golan Heights. In response, Israel's Foreign Minister, Gideon Sa ar, instructed Dutch diplomats in Ramallah to return their Israeli-issued diplomatic documents within a week, after which their diplomatic privileges would cease.

This move follows Israel's decision in August to remove two Dutch representatives from the Gaza support center in Kiryat Gat. The Netherlands, once considered one of Israel's closest allies in Europe, has seen its relationship with Israel deteriorate significantly under the current government led by Rob Jetten, a member of the centrist liberal D66 party.

Despite criticism of Israel, the government continues to support Israel's security and advocate for a two-state solution. The ban, however, excludes all trade with Israel but applies to the specific settlements the Netherlands considers illegal. The Dutch government maintains a distinction between the Netanyahu government and the State of Israel, supporting a Palestinian state alongside a secure Israel and condemning Hamas's October 7 attack.

The government's stance on immigration and domestic policies, however, has led to some criticism within D66, with calls for more pressure on Israel.
