IEAG calls on FDA to resolve delays in import code issuance

The Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana (IEAG) has urged the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) to swiftly address reported delays in issuing import codes and permits for regulated goods at Ghana's ports. These delays have left some shipments uncleared, with importers facing difficulties completing necessary FDA procedures and customs clearance.

IEAG Executive Secretary Samson Asaki Awingobit highlighted the urgent need to tackle this issue, especially considering the existing pressures at Ghana's ports. The IEAG acknowledged FDA's regulatory duties but noted that the Centre for Import and Export Control (CIEC) at Tema Port relies on the Integrated Customs Management System (ICUMS) for permit control.

The association stressed that FDA approval is essential before a regulated shipment can be verified and released. IEAG concerns include potential extra charges such as terminal storage fees, shipping-line demurrage, container detention costs, handling fees, financing expenses, and additional logistics expenses due to prolonged cargo dwell times.

The IEAG called for FDA to investigate the delays, identify challenges, and restore normal processing for compliant applications. It also urged expedited processing of pending applications and clear communication on the issue to all stakeholders. IEAG emphasized the critical role of Ghana's ports for trade and industry and urged for improved inter-agency coordination to eliminate avoidable bottlenecks and prevent compliant importers from bearing increased costs due to regulatory delays.
