Huertas: "Mapfre pone el acento en la seguridad tecnológica"

Antonio Huertas, the president of Mapfre, highlighted the emphasis on technological safety in the insurance giant's future strategic plan that will begin in January 2027 and last until the end of 2029. Speaking at the XVII Encuentro Financiero, organized by EXPANSIÓN-KPMG, Huertas emphasized the importance of guaranteeing that artificial intelligence (AI) does not become a source of problems for the group. He stated that significant investments in safety measures are crucial as AI generators are very aggressive.

Huertas explained that safety for applying technology is the major change in the strategic plan that prepares the group. He further stated that AI will transform daily life and clearly, also the insurance industry, which has been doubted by many for its potential to undermine the sector. However, in Huertas' opinion, rather than posing a risk to the insurance model, it provides an opportunity to reach the vast number of people who currently lack access to insurance.

In America, he noted, users often lack information or access. The future roadmap of Mapfre will also include the integration of Safety, a company acquired by the Spanish group in the U.S., an operation that could close next January if Mapfre obtains all necessary authorizations from the federal regulator. With this acquisition, the group gains the necessary scale to compete in auto and home insurance, sectors where Mapfre is already present through its subsidiary.

Huertas noted that Safety is a formidable competitor, but when strategic projects are unclear, it's better to seek support. Mapfre has a much stronger project in the U.S., and Safety preferred to combine forces with Mapfre before falling into the hands of another U.S. insurer.
