French National Library honours Argentine writer Alberto Manguel

The French National Library (BnF) has recently honored Argentine writer Alberto Manguel with its annual prize, alongside a special jury prize for US singer and artist Patti Smith. This double recognition celebrates the profound impact of both writers on literature and culture. The BnF explained that this award seeks to promote openness and intercultural dialogue in relation to their respective documentary legacies.

A bibliophile at heart, Manguel, who is 78 years old, is the author of acclaimed works like A History of Reading (1996) and The Library at Night (2006), which delve into the world of books and reading. The BnF highlighted his lifelong engagement with books, libraries, and French culture, underscoring his work centered around the act of reading.

In addition to Manguel, the BnF awarded Smith, a major figure in contemporary artistic creation, with a special jury prize. Known for her work spanning poetry, literature, music, photography, and visual arts, Smith's contributions reflect deep ties with France and its culture. The 10,000-euro (US$11,300) prize traditionally honors the lifetime achievements of a living French-language author, but this year it was awarded to a foreign writer whose work has been translated into French, demonstrating a commitment to bridging international literary traditions.
