France: Student protests over conditions at French high schools fuel political clashes

Protests erupted in French high schools on Monday, leading to injuries, arrests, and heated exchanges between political figures. The demonstrations, which started last week in the Paris area, have now spread nationwide, with students blockading schools over overcrowded classes, heavy workloads, subpar learning resources, and teacher shortages.

Footage showed students setting off flares and fireworks inside buildings while police used tear gas. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez confirmed incidents at approximately 180 schools, resulting in 164 arrests and injuries to 12 students, three teachers, and 12 police officers. Nunez emphasized the severity of the situation, stating that it was not about making demands but involved "violence in its purest form."

Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu condemned the "irresponsible" escalation, warning against endangering students, staff, or police officers. Education Minister Edouard Geffray accused violent elements of exploiting the protests, particularly the left-wing La France Insoumise (LFI) party and its presidential candidate, Jean-Luc Melenchon.

Melenchon accused the government of a racist crackdown, prompting Lecornu to label the accusation as an insult. In Saint-Denis, the left-leaning LFI-run local council endorsed the students' demands, stating that authorities should "come and talk to [the students] and see for themselves whether the youth are being instrumentalized."

The French Union of High School Students (Union Syndicale Lycéenne) pledged to call for a nationwide blockade on Tuesday, aligning with public sector workers' planned strike action. With a presidential election just seven months away and President Emmanuel Macron barred from running again, politicians across the political spectrum are searching for issues that resonate with voters.
