Five HK unis make world's top 100: survey

Five universities based in Hong Kong have secured spots in the global top 100, according to the latest Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2027. The University of Hong Kong retained its position at 33rd place, maintaining its status as the SAR's leading tertiary institution. Chinese University slipped down one place to 42nd in the rankings.

The University of Science and Technology remained at 58th place, while City University of Hong Kong made history by reaching an all-time high of 70th. Polytechnic University climbed up to 79th in the global rankings.

In contrast, Tsinghua University in Beijing came within striking distance of the world's elite institutions, climbing one spot to 11th in the rankings. The survey highlighted the Asian universities' commitment to academic excellence, with three institutions entering the top 15 for the first time, 21 universities landing in the top 100, and 40 institutions securing a place in the top 200.

The traditional powerhouses of British and American universities continued their dominance at the top of the rankings. The University of Oxford retained the top spot for the 11th consecutive year, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Princeton University and Stanford University shared third place in the global rankings.

The Times Higher Education survey, which studied five key performance indicators, ranked a record 2,297 institutions worldwide. These indicators included teaching quality, research environment, research quality, international outlook, and industry influence.
