Five HK unis make world's top 100: survey

Five universities located in Hong Kong have once again secured spots within the global top 100 universities as per the 2027 rankings published by The Times Higher Education. The University of Hong Kong retained its position as the top tertiary institution in the region, maintaining its 33rd place ranking. The Chinese University of Hong Kong, previously at 41st, dropped one place to claim the 42nd spot.

The University of Science and Technology remained constant at 58th. City University of Hong Kong and Polytechnic University achieved notable advancements, climbing to 70th and 79th places respectively, marking their highest ever rankings.

In contrast, Tsinghua University in Beijing edged closer to entering the top tier of global universities, securing the 11th position - just one step away from joining the elite group. The survey further revealed that Asian universities demonstrated a strong commitment to academic excellence, as evidenced by their overall improvement in rankings. Three Asian institutions made their inaugural appearance in the top 15, while 21 universities entered the top 100, and 40 universities crossed the threshold to join the top 200.

The competitive landscape of global higher education remained dominated by British and American institutions, as they continued to occupy the top 10 spots. The University of Oxford held onto the first position for an impressive 11th consecutive year, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Princeton University and Stanford University shared the third place.

This year's survey incorporated data from 2,297 institutions across the globe, evaluating them based on five key performance indicators: teaching quality, research environment, research output, international outlook, and industry influence. The rankings were meticulously compiled and edited by Edmond Fong.
