Durbar restrictions: Kano Govt warns against mobilising people to disobey lawful directives

The government of Kano State has issued a stern warning to traditional rulers, religious leaders, community leaders, political figures, and general public against mobilizing individuals to defy lawful government orders. This caution comes in response to disagreements surrounding the recent limitations imposed on Durbar festivities and the ongoing legal challenge concerning the Kano Emirship.

The government's message, as outlined in a statement by Aminu Hussaini, the Special Adviser to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf on Justice and Constitutional Matters, urges all parties to handle disputes through lawful channels rather than resorting to confrontations or actions that could jeopardize public tranquility. The warning was prompted by a video that has been widely shared on social media, showcasing Sarkin Dawaki Babba's commentary on the imposed restrictions and his perspective on the legal proceedings related to the Emirship.

According to the statement, while citizens hold the right to express their opinions on matters of public concern, the interpretation and execution of court orders are exclusively the domain of the courts. The statement emphasizes that personal interpretation of a court order does not grant an individual the legal authority to contravene a directive issued by an authoritative public body.

Should any individual believe that a government order is at odds with a court order, the recommended course of action is to seek judicial clarification or pursue alternative legal remedies. The government also appeals to those entangled in the Emirship dispute to permit the ongoing court cases to proceed without using them as justification for disputes between citizens and government officials.

It encourages traditional rulers, religious and community leaders, political actors, and the general public to maintain restraint in their communications and actions. The government asserts that while legitimate disagreements can be voiced, legal grievances must be directed towards the courts. It reiterates that lawful directives remain enforceable unless modified, suspended, or annulled by a competent authority.

The government reaffirms its unwavering commitment to upholding the rule of law, respecting constitutional rights, preserving judicial independence, and facilitating peaceful dispute resolution. Hussaini cautioned that any attempt to incite citizens to disregard lawful directives, obstruct lawful authorities, or disrupt public peace will be addressed swiftly, firmly, and strictly in accordance with the law.
