Community service for tahfiz student who broke junior’s wrist

In a recent court hearing, a 15-year-old tahfiz school student was sentenced for breaking a junior's wrist after the victim mocked how the accused performed the call to prayer. The Batu Pahat magistrates court handed down a three-year good behaviour bond with a RM1,000 fine, imposed several conditions, and ordered 90 hours of community service within six months.

Magistrate Mustaqim Sukarno also mandated a curfew from 9pm to 6am and required the teenager to report to the Welfare Department's (JKM) every two months for monitoring and counseling. The juvenile was charged under Section 325 of the Penal Code for intentionally causing hurt and faced the possibility of up to seven years in prison and a fine.

Deputy public prosecutor Nur Shazleen Ibrahim represented the prosecution while lawyer Zurina Sidek spoke on behalf of the accused. The incident occurred on June 30 at the tahfiz school's surau in Ayer Hitam, Johor, where the accused slapped the victim in response to a snide remark about his prayer call. A shoving match ensued, resulting in the victim's wrist being broken.
