Community service for tahfiz student who broke junior’s wrist

In a case that took place on June 30 at the surau of a tahfiz school in Ayer Hitam, Johor, a 15-year-old student was found guilty of intentionally causing harm to his 14-year-old junior. The defendant slapped the victim after the younger boy made a mocking remark about the accused's recitation of the call to prayer, or azan. This incident was followed by a shoving match, during which the victim sustained a broken wrist.

The Batu Pahat Magistrates Court handed down a three-year good behavior bond, imposing a RM1,000 fine on the accused. Conditions included a curfew from 9pm to 6am and regular reporting to the Welfare Department for monitoring. The young offender was also required to undergo counseling and submit a monthly report to the Welfare Department throughout the duration of his sentence.

The court deemed that the 90 hours of community service should be completed within the six-month period following the guilty plea, taking into account the appellant's mitigation and the Welfare Department's recommendation. Deputy Public Prosecutor Nur Shazleen Ibrahim represented the prosecution, while lawyer Zurina Sidek stood in for the defendant.
