Chile's defence minister backs trade between Punta Arenas and the Falklands

Chile's Defence Minister Fernando Barros Tocornal has expressed support for commercial development between Magallanes region and the Falkland Islands, stating that his country's backing for Argentina's sovereignty claim does not restrict trade with the islands. During a visit to the region on September 24-25, Barros told Radio Polar that the Magallanes community has "the right to trade" and sees "no impediments" to these activities under the legal framework.

He reiterated Chile's support for Argentina's claim over the Malvinas or Falklands, noting that the UK has administered the archipelago for 200 years, with the exception of a 1982 interruption. Barros emphasized that this support must be expressed in line with international law, respecting the will and interests of the people involved and by peaceful means.

The remarks, while not altering Chile's diplomatic position, have been described as "at the very least confusing" by La Nación. The development of closer trade ties, including a potential sea link between Punta Arenas and Stanley, is currently being explored. Chile's Mercosur and Unasur commitments remain political, not legally binding, and the Falkland Islands Development Corporation has signed a contract with Easter Island Naviera, a Chilean company, for the first voyage planned for November.
