The growth of AI-related job postings has doubled since 2025, as revealed by Indeed's analysis of job listings. This increasing pressure on employees to acquire AI skills is exacerbated by the swift development and widespread adoption of the technology.

To prepare for these changes, a chatbot developed by The Handelsblatt in collaboration with experts can assess an individual's readiness for the AI-driven workplace. This interactive tool simulates a consultation session with Jutta Rump, a professor of personnel management, who evaluates the responder's answers. Professor Rump explains that the shift caused by AI does not necessarily lead to job losses; instead, it results in the creation of vacant positions and the alteration of task profiles.

She suggests that the gap created by demographic changes might be smaller due to AI, but this also intensifies competition among employees. The greatest risk, Rump warns, is maintaining an unchanged job profile. The chatbot helps identify specific areas for learning and improvement, serving as a compass for the next steps. Key skills required for AI-enhanced job roles were developed by experts in personnel development, covering both general and profession-specific skills.

After using the chatbot, individuals can determine where to further enhance their AI competencies. To select appropriate AI training, experts recommend three criteria: building on existing knowledge, high-quality content, and practical application. Training focused solely on a single tool or prompt engineering is insufficient. Courses should teach how to use AI effectively, evaluate results, and assess limitations, errors, data quality, as well as legal and ethical risks.

Practical exercises based on real-life professional scenarios are also important. While technical skills related to AI are relevant, experts emphasize the importance of personal strengths. Innovation researcher Fabian Stephany at Oxford University advises focusing not only on technical knowledge but also on developing human skills and leveraging one's own strengths.

The pyramid of competencies includes foundational expertise, human abilities, and top-level technical AI capabilities. Stephany warns that relying solely on AI can lead to a loss of control over one's work quality, highlighting the importance of resilience, teamwork, and critical thinking. Meta-cognitive skills such as problem structuring, precise questioning, argument development, result reflection, and knowledge transfer are also crucial.

Two development paths emerge: hybrid profiles, where existing jobs change due to AI, and new specialized roles focused on AI development and oversight. Experts recommend distinguishing between routine tasks and expert-level work, with the latter being performed by humans to ensure quality. The goal is to have AI handle 80% of routine tasks, while humans manage the remaining 20% that requires specialized knowledge.
