Bickerstaff Says Pistons Defensive Identity Won’t Change Without Stewart

Detroit Pistons coach J.B. Bickerstaff emphasized during media day that the team's defensive identity will remain unchanged, regardless of roster alterations. Despite finishing second in team defensive rating last season and third in fewest opposing points, the Pistons will still lack significant defensive contributors without All-Defensive First Team selection Ausar Thompson.

Bickerstaff stressed, "We’ve created the identity of this team, and that’s who we are, and that won’t change year to year, doesn’t change person to person." The biggest defensive challenge comes from the absence of center Isaiah Stewart, who was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies. Reed, who will take on a larger role, is described by Bickerstaff as "the hardest working player I’ve ever been around."

The Pistons are also focused on improving their shooting, but Bickerstaff and other team members are wary that this improvement might come at the expense of their defensive identity.
