APPCB moves to shut two Nellore prawn processing units for releasing untreated wastewater

The Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board (APPCB) plans to shut two prawn processing units in Nellore district for releasing untreated wastewater into drains and burning solid waste, as part of a state-wide crackdown on aquaculture facilities. Deputy Chief Minister K. Pawan Kalyan, who oversees the forest and environment portfolio, directed the board to enforce rules strictly, following his order on September 28.

APPCB Chairman P. Krishnaiah, through his Chief Environmental Engineer M. Rajasekhar, inspected multiple units in the district on September 26 to assess waste and wastewater management practices. The Water Base Limited, processing eight tonnes of prawns daily at Ananthapuram, and Abaad Overseas Private Limited, handling 20 tonnes per day in Kudithipalem, were found to be discharging untreated wastewater directly into drains.

Despite having Effluent Treatment Plants, these facilities were not operating them, instead burning the solid waste. The APPCB has begun the closure process for both units and plans to issue closure orders. Across the state, APPCB officials have collected samples from 82 units, with deviations found in pH, floating solids, and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) levels, which can harm aquatic life.

Ten units have been issued show-cause notices with two weeks to rectify issues. High BOD levels in wastewater reduce dissolved oxygen, endangering fish and other aquatic organisms. The APPCB Chairman emphasized stringent action against polluting industries, legal action for health and environment violations, and urged industries to prioritize waste management, pollution control, and environmental protection alongside their core operations.
