Carlos Queiroz, the head coach of Ghana's national football team, the Black Stars, has highlighted the severity of his team's recent performance in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. In a recent match, Ghana suffered a heavy 4-2 defeat to The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium, leaving them without a win in their last eight AFCON qualification matches.

Queiroz emphasized that this recent loss is part of a long-standing trend of poor results in qualifiers, stating, "It’s not the first time that Ghana does win a match in the qualifiers. It’s become number eight. So this issue doesn’t start today. It doesn’t start yesterday. We have 8 games." The defeat compounds Ghana's difficult start to the 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign, following a 2-0 loss to Côte d'Ivoire in their opening Group C fixture.

This marks two consecutive defeats under Queiroz, who returned to the national team after Ghana's disappointing World Cup campaign in 2026. The Black Stars have failed to win any of their last eight matches in AFCON qualification, and their absence from the 2025 AFCON further compounds their struggles. To secure a place in the 2027 AFCON tournament, Ghana will need a significant improvement in their remaining qualifiers.
